We are safely back home in Cookstown now at our old mailing address. It has taken some time to get our internet and phone back together, along with all our other things, like health cards, insurance, remembering when trash day is, where we put everything, etc...

It has been a great adventure but we are all excited to be home and seeing all our friends and Scout.  The tenets were great and took good care of our home.  Our plants are all out of control and it looks like a jungle in places, but h...

Separate Ways

Posted by Bryan on Monday, June 16, 2014, In : The end
After 3 weeks of cleaning and organizing the boat it is looking great!  My dad traveled with us up to Solomon's Island and from there we traveled through thunderstorms and heavy heavy rain up to Annapolis.  The boat is in its final dockage now.  It will stay in the water for a few months and hopefully sell.  If  not, we can put it up in the yard here.  Bert Jabins is a huge boat yard.

On Saturday the 14th, Tara and Sahara flew back to Ontario.  Sahara is going back to school for a few weeks an...

Long Walk Home

Posted by Sahara on Sunday, May 25, 2014, In : Aftermath
Hello again faithful blog followers. We are now at the end of our journey/quest/expedition-whatever you want to call it- and are back in Reedville, after 10 months of living on a floating vessel. For the  next week we will just be staying with our grandparents and register Northern Phoenix as an american boat, so as to be able to sell it in America. And then the work begins, where we will be back to fixing up the boat yet again to make it fit to give to a new owner.

So there will be no more...

Wrightsville Beach

Posted by Devon on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, In : ICW Northbound

One day we went to Wrightsville beach to go in the water, but we also went there because Debbie’s family was going to pick us up to take us to their house. The waves at the beach varied between the 10 foot tall waves and small 1 foot waves. Some waves I had to run away from to get to the beach. There was a dredging process under way when we were at the beach and there was a huge pipe going from the boat to where the sand piled up on the beach a mile away. Every one of us went swimming excep...

Swan Point and Beaufort

Posted by Sahara on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, In : ICW Northbound
Three days ago we pulled into the lovelyish marina of Swan Point, with the intentions of only staying the night and leaving early in the morning. Dad had noticed that there was another boat at the marina with kids our age on it, but being the shy, self-conscious kids that we are, Devon and I elected to stay in the sheltered confinements of the boat, taking advantage of the wifi signal and whatnot.  Making no contact with other human beings.

However, our plan was to be foiled, as the Dad’s ...

Sushi

Posted by Sahara on Friday, May 16, 2014, In : Food

To celebrate a completely insignificant Thursday night, we decided to make sushi. Hence our long and tedious to the fish store, where we were subject to lots of fishing stories and tips from the fish manager. He was quite nice, however, and gave us 2lb of tuna, swordfish, and some shrimp.

The sword and the shrimp we ended up putting away for another day, and the tuna we also cut up and parted. Most of it was left raw, some was pan seared, and the rest was also put in the fridge. Believe it or...

GOLF CART EXPERIENCE

Posted by Devon on Friday, May 16, 2014, In : ICW Northbound

On bald head island we rented a golf cart so we could drive around to go to stores and parks.

We first went to go to a grocery store to get some lunch things and chips, when we were done we went to the boat to change into a swim suits and left to go to the beach. The beach was really cool because it had a big drop off at the beginning and later on it would come back up in a sand bar and it would be around 1 ½ feet deep so this is where the waves were crashing, it was a very nice beach.

Mothers Day and Food

Posted by Bryan and Devon on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, In : ICW Northbound
We had our first anchor drag.  It wasn't really that bad.  As we were trying to set the anchor, it did not seem to want to catch.  Unusual, the anchor has been perfect so far.  So as we dragged far enough that we realized something was wrong, we pulled the anchor up to try and reset it.  Up came a mushed crab put.  We had dropped it right on an old crab pot and caught it.  So the anchor is still perfect.

We traveled up some rivers, far enough to get to fresh enough water that we saw a few smal...

Charleston S.C. and Beyond

We stopped for a day to visit Charleston and visit our favorite wings place.  Sticky Fingers!!!  first the wings are smoked for a few hours.  2.  Chilled over night.  3. Dusted with spice mix, not bread, and quick fried.  Delivered with no sauce, but 5 different sauces on the table.  Absolutely amazing!!!

So little time and soooo much chocolate. It was a hard decision,  and then there are the fresh fudge stores!

Week In Hitlon Head

Posted by Devon on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, In : Meeting People

On March Friday the 2nd, Mom left to go to some unknown place (Boston), before she left though, we went to an aerial obstacle climbing place. How you did it was that you first got into this harness and clipped on this safety roller thing to a wire so you don’t fall off the course and break your leg or something. The first thing we did I don’t remember, but we had to ride a fake bird to another platform for about 5 seconds. My favorite ride was one with a slide that you go down on that dro...

Hello again, people who follow our blog. Now, just a note, I am going to refer the day that we did this activity as “today” when, in fact, we actually did it on Thursday last week. Anyway, said activity was an Aerial Course. An aerial rope course, in fact. That is when a bunch a people that labor many months to construct a giant obstacle course 50 feet in the air, in which you try to navigate without tragically falling to your death. This is quite difficult to do, seeing as they have high...

This is our second time here and it was a very peaceful anchorage, we even saw one of the boats that we saw last time. when we were at Cumberland island, we had to row against a very strong current, around at 2 knots. we first went around a long trail to see the horses and there was a lot of spanish moss.

When we got to the horses, there were only two so we thought that the horse people must have took the people somewhere else. as we moved on to the beach, we found out that it was low tide f...

Second Boat Crash

I have come to inform you all about the second time we were hit by a motor boat. There does seem to be a trend here.

Anyway, we were anchored out in the middle of nowhere, in a very strong current, perhaps going 4 knots (because of the 10 foot tide...it was a New moon). We had out 125 feet of chain in 13 feet of water at low tide. The motor boat was anchored behind us....until about 11 pm when the current changed directions and were now in front of us. Everyone was in bed- again, the hit ha...

Melbourne to New Smyrna Beach

A long trip, but few opening bridges to deal with.  And with longer day light, we can go for 10-11 hours.

One of the days we were in Melbourne (oh my, doesn't this sound familiar.), we saw this amazing cake in the grocery store. It was all rainbow and colorful, and seeing as we felt like we didn't celebrate Easter in its fullness, we could bake this cake to compensate.

And, as probably most of you will have guessed by reading the above statement, it did not resemble the box picture, whatsoever...

It feels good to be on the water again moving north.  Over the last three days we did not cover a lot of miles (125) compared to our normal travels due to Bridges!!!!  In the last 3 days we have had to time our trip to go through 23 bridges.

All while dealing with Holiday traffic, which wasn't that bad due to the cool weather.

Rapids Water Park

April 16th

Rapids waterpark was not one of those waterparks with the fountains and the little things that spray water everywhere, no, this was a waterpark with slides that go down 70 feet. It had 30 slides and some of them were really scary at first.

The one we went to first was a inner tube one that we all went through at once, it was really scary because it was our first slide and it had big and sudden drops. My favourite one was called the pirate plunge, it went down a total of 70 feet and...

Difficulties

Posted by Sahara on Sunday, April 6, 2014, In : Delays

We’ve had some unexpected problems, but nothing too major. Still, we had to head back to the states early to get them fixed. At our last marina docking in Bimini, some motor yacht hit the back of our boat while we were visiting with the Morrison’s.  So the railings are all pulled out, and parts of the deck are coming up, and the dinghy is slightly warped. But don’t worry, thanks to our aluminum dinghy, we scratched up their boat pretty bad. Broken windows, scrapes, and the like.

So we...

When we arrived at Bimini, we decided to go exploring. Bimini is 8 miles long, and 200 yards wide, so it wasn’t exactly a long exploration. But there were some pretty interesting things to see. Like the all-green house. In case you haven’t noticed, I am easily entertained by house colors. Anyway, there was the beach on the western side, where we took lots of pictures of the blue water. We need to imprint it in our mind and cameras, because we aren’t going to be seeing it for a very long...

3.      3. Oh my gosh Word automatically puts in the list numbers

4.     4.  Test batter to ensure safety of crew

An Update: Because We Have Been Very Neglectful

Posted by Sahara on Thursday, April 3, 2014, In : Bahamas

So on March 31 we finally left the Abacos, and after a 9 hour voyage which was completely dull but had good sandwiches, reached White Cay of the Berry islands. Of course, since there were some very nice beaches at White Cay, we decided to visit them. They also had very interesting rocks. We weren’t even there for 5 minutes before I became enraptured in a glass bottle (to be fair, it was very interesting, it had been melted together, and so looked very cool) and was holding it a bit too h...

Let’s see… Our last post was the 15. Oh my, I have 10 days to cover. Bear with me if it’s not too detailed (that is honestly one of the weirdest expressions humans have come up with. I really don't want a bear with me). I can’t even remember the days we were there. Actually, I wouldn't even know what today is if it didn't show it on the bottom of the computer screen. And even then it’s complicated, because it doesn't actually say what day of the week it is. It’s a hard life.

Staniel is an interesting Cay, more like how I expected Bahamian civilization to be like. The community is completely dependent on tourism of course, and even has its own airport- if it can be called that. The stores and shops seem barely large enough to support the island. And, like all Bahamian places, they bought out the paint isle when building the houses. You could find pretty much every color house, from blue to yellow to orange to purple.

Although hard to see in the pictures, all the islands are different. Not huge differences, but each unique.  This place had a rocky (old coral) like beach.  The rocks for fun to climb around.  NOT slippery at all.  There is no ...

Highborne Cay

Posted by Bryan on Saturday, January 25, 2014, In : Exumas

For the past 2 days we have been staying in a lovely marina at Highbourne Cay. Highbourne was considerably larger than Allan’s Cay, meaning that you couldn’t see the other side of the island at any given time. Well, you probably could if the hills were not in the way. Yes, Highbourne is mostly just a bunch of hills, hence the name. The
first day we were here we saw some sharks. Not just any one shark, swimming by fast enough that it’s hard to really distinguish what it is. More like a...

Allens Cay

Jan 20
Today we arrived at Allan’s Cay, one of the first islands that you can get to safely by boat that make up the exumas! It was a short trip; only 4 hours or so. We had to spend the first two keeping watch for coral heads, where there was a possibility of grounding the boat. However, what we couldn’t get over was it was 20 feet deep, and we could see the ripples on the sand. No fish though.

When we anchored, it was decided that we had to go swimming because it was really really hot ...

By Devon
On Saturday, January 18 we arrived at Rose Island and my mom and I set out on our dinghy to a rocky long island. We found out that it wasn’t rock, it was actually old and dead coral, we found this out by chopping of chunks and seeing small shells, big cone-like shells, and this weird centipede like creature only a lot bigger and weird tentacles growing out the bottom.

Most of the island was like this until I spotted a small clearing in the trees which led a beach ...

Rose Island

Jan. 18

Today we realized two things: One, the marina was getting very expensive to stay at and we needed to get out, and two… or maybe just one thing. So we undocked, and drove over to a small nearby island, Rose Island. The water was very clear (and very blue, I might add) and it was a nice day out, so we decided to go snorkeling by the small rock islands and the rock cliff and just around. I don’t think it is grammatically correct to have 4 ands in one sentence, but then again, my Engl...

Jan 13-16

Yesterday we arrived- officially, or legally, that is- in Nassau, Bahamas!!  It was a two day trip, and it was long, tiring, and otherwise uneventful. The first day we traveled all through the night, taking shifts. Oh, and I should probably say that we had a stowaway on the voyage as well; ex- navy captain Gerry. He also owns- and is currently rebuilding- a Whitby 42, and has crossed to the Bahamas at least 10 times, 7 which were on Whitby’s.
Anyway, the night traveling, aside f...

New Smyrna Beach Fl.

For the past week we have been up near Orlando, visiting family. They had a soccer tournament, so we went to see that
and then continued on to the house that they had rented, and which we were going to stay at for the week.

The first night we went out to a Japanese Steakhouse, which was pretty awesome. You would sit at a U-shaped table, and in the middle was a large metal sheet which they did all the cooking on. These guys are skilled; it’s hard to describe ...

While we were at the cat place, we also were packing up to go to a beach house that the cousins (Meridian, Acadia, Sawyer) rented because of Meridian’s soccer game in Orlando. We rented a car and drove to their house with some presents and beach things. It took around 3 hours to get there because the traffic was so bad we didn’t even get to the hotel, we had to go straight to the soccer field. When we got there, we had a lot of fun and Sawyer a...

So that would have been... Thursday? Let’s just say that. A couple days ago at a grocery store we got a lot of pina-colada and margarita mixes which were normal, strawberry, lime, mango, and orange drinks. My favorite was the strawberry margarita because I like the strawberry flavor and I don’t know why. We had pina-coladas nearly 3 times every day because they were so good, I even think that we should have got more for that same reason.

For Christmas we first had our presents opened and we got some pretty nice stuff, includin...

For a little celebration- more like we just wanted to get out of the boat (boat fever) - we got a reservation on the snorkeling catamaran Quicksilver for 9:00 in the morning. Actually, we were almost late because mom and dad slept in. We had to get them up! And skip breakfast.

The brought our cameras to the pools because we thought of taking some (a lot) of underwater pictures, the pictures were really funny because they have a lot of background features that were funny. For example, you can see me swimming through Sahara's head.  The Marina has 4 different pools and 3 hot tubs to hang out in. The Pools are salt water pools, so no chlorine smell.  They have cookies at 3:00 each day.

Wave Poem
by Sahara

Flowing, ever moving
Crashing, breaking, rolling
Large or small they rule
The surface of the sea
Sparkling in the sun
Relentless in the storm
They pound and crash and smash
They take and don’t return
They shape the land and rock
Erode it all away
To fifty feet they rise
And even higher still
They sweep it all away
Flowing, ever moving
Caused by tides, winds, currents
They will always be there
They are the ocean’s power
They are the ruling waves
Flowing, ever moving.

Jumping Through Waves

When you are jumping through the large waves,. There are three main ways for jumping the big waves, first, if they are medium waves you will be able to jump them, you should try to keep your head above the water too.

Second, you can jump through the waves that are about to crash on you.  Third, you can jump under the even larger waves, that is when it IS crashing on you so you won’t get crushed. Though there is yet another one that is not a main, think about th...

Posted by Sahara on Saturday, November 9, 2013, In : Towns and Cities
We got to Wrightsville two days ago. On our first day, we didn’t do much as we got in later in the afternoon. Well, we did go to the Bluewater restaurant, which serves fresh seafood, and was really good!!  The next day we met with a friend, who was really awesome and brought cookies!!!!!!! This was a working day, when we just fixed up or put on some stuff, like lights and engine oil. For diner, we had fresh caught shrimp, which you can catch all around here, and yellow fin tuna. For those w...

Mile 280, Wilmington NC

Posted by Devon on Saturday, November 9, 2013,
Sat. November 9,

Today we went to wrightsville beach. When we were going, we brought our wet suits just in

case The water was cold.well it was so we put them on and went into the water, but at this

place, the waves were huge so it took a while to get out there. When we got out, I already got

pulled under by a wave, which is really fun, until you are drowning. But after that is fun, like I

body-surfed a couple waves and we jumped the others. What's really fun is that when a big

wave is coming, th...

Beaufort to 245 Swans point

Posted by Sahara on Thursday, November 7, 2013, In : ICW Travels

ICW Swan Point, New River Inlet Nov. 06

Today was not the most exciting day, just more marshes and canals and bridges. For the first half of the day it rained on and off, and was very foggy out. The most excitement in the morning was the first bridge, where mom freaked out about height issues. But, like I told her, you find out if you are too high for the bridge fairly quickly. We did see dolphins heading out of Beaufort, but briefly.   Hmmm... Now I’m trying to remember what else we did,...

In Beaufort NC. Mile marker 205

Posted by Bryan on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, In : ICW Travels
We traveled from mile marker 135 (Belhaven) to Mile marker 205, Beaufort, today.  Winds were 15-20 knots for most of the trip, but subsided at the most open water part!!!  The wind was helpfull today.  It was a North east wind that pushed along in the Neuse river.  With an early start, 6:30, we were able to have our anchor set by 4:00 and go exploring and see some wild horses!!!  Beaufort is a very busy marine area.  Commercial fishing and easy access to the ocean with well protected ports ma...

Belhaven NC Mile 135

Posted by Bryan on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, In : Towns and Cities
We took a short 8 mile trip today from our peaceful anchor last night to Belhaven North Carolina.  The Night was so calm, not what was foretasted.  Another boat we have been cruising with was anchored at the other end of the Canal and had 30 knot winds!!!  We had 30 knot winds on the way here, but the river is narrow and although windy, it was not rough.  We got the auto pilot fixed (well.....ok, not fixed, but re corrected the pilot error of button pushing and reset the correct settings so n...

Kooky Lady Strikes Again

Posted by Sahara on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, In : Towns and Cities

Belhaven Memorial Museum

Today we went to the Belhaven Memorial Museum, as it was a cold windy day and we had nothing better to do. The entire museum is a collection of some kooky lady, though it’s actually very interesting. She collected EVERYTHING. Literally. But before I tell you about that, I’ll give you some history. This lady, who people called Mrs.Why, collected for 70 years. She died at age 93 in 1962, which was old for that time. Though I think she could have done something bet...

Belhaven memorial museum

When we arrived at Belhaven, we went to the museum. At first we thought it was a normal museum, but after we got inside it was about a really insane woman who collected nearly everything. But what I really liked was the 45 pound German machine gun that was in World War 1, the 2 headed pig, the Cyclops pig, the eight-legged pig and a lot of other things. Some other cools things like a whale skull and anchor from a British warship from the early 1800s (probably 2-3 hundr...

Shaken, not stirred Mile 65-130

Posted by Bryan on Monday, November 4, 2013, In : ICW Travels
Today we crossed the Albemarle sound in some rough conditions.  The forcast for "1-2 foot waves" was a little off.  The winds were 15-20 knots, out of the Northwest.  Gusts up to 25. (50 km or 28 miles). We had lots of company on the trip.  The sound and then the Alligator river are VERY SHALLOW.  A body of water that is 15 miles across, but i couldn't find a depth greater than 15 feet on the map.  And the river was only 9 feet deep.  This makes the waves stand up straight!  So we were shaken...

ICW to North Carolina! Mile 0 - 65

Posted by Bryan on Saturday, November 2, 2013, In : ICW Travels
We got out of the Chesapeake bay finally.  We delayed one extra day because of the high winds, that was the Norfolk day.  We left at 7:00 in the morning to get a good start on the day so we would have plenty of time to dock before dark. The ICW, or Inner Coastal Water way (A.K.A. the big ditch) can take us all the way around Florida to the Mississippi river if we wanted to go that way.

We had to go under 5 or 6 bridges that we had to wait to open, plus the one lock.  No very high, just 2 feet....

Norfolk

Posted by Bryan on Saturday, November 2, 2013, In : Towns and Cities
Nov 1st

We spent the day seeing some of the attractions in Norfolk.  We went to the USS Wisconsin, and Iowa Class battle ship that was retired not too long ago.  It last served in the Iraq war.  Some cool facts, the 16 inch guns could shoot a 2,000 lb bomb over 20 miles, and in later years had Tomahawk missile that could shoot 1,200 miles.  To put that in perspective, from Norfolk VA where it is now, it could hit Toronto.

Norfolk Virginia

Posted by Bryan on Friday, November 1, 2013, In : Traveling
October 31st.
Norfolk is an old town that has been so built up in the last 100 years, it is hard to find the "old town".  There are huge shipping lanes going right in behind the city (away from the ocean side).  Giant tankers, military ships, aircraft carriers, battle ships, etc... are all traveling in the little river way.  Along with a 1-2 knot current and not much room.  Then the constant calls by the Navy to boat that are too close to the Navy ships.  Quite a busy place there.

October 31st,

Today we got an early start heading to Norfolk, as the reports were for 30-40 knot winds today. Mom and Dad began the day with pulling up the anchor and starting the engine… which are loud… at 7:00 in the morning.  Needless to say it woke Devon and I up.  So that was how our uneventful day started.  Now I will skip to the part where it got exciting. We were just on the edge of Norfolk, in the beginning of the afternoon, and admiring the giant tanker heading our direction.  Mo...

THE “SOUND OF FREEDOM”

Posted by Devon on Friday, November 1, 2013, In : Traveling

October 30th we were motoring out of Deltaville and we were pretty much the only ones out. Suddenly, there was a really loud BA-BANG!! And I thought that the propane exploded or we were getting shot at. Since it was behind us, I ran down and checked the aft cabin but there was no damage. So I went back up, and a bit later there was a radio call that said it was the "sound of freedom" (a fighter jet going faster than the speed of sound.) So we were all relieved that no damage has been done to ...

Deltaville

October 29th
We stopped in Deltaville, at the Deltaville Marina.  If you have access to nautical charts, or perhaps zoom in on Google earth, the entrance is CRAZY.  We touched ground a few times on the way in and out.  Great for motor boats, not so great for Sailboats.  Marina had a courtesy car that we used to go pick up our parts and then took the time to do a few more repairs and upgrades.  Finished the generator and installed LED spreader lights.  Very bright for very little power.  Change...

Leaving Reedville

We are finally saying good by to Reedville.  Just before we left, we invested in a new camera with some zoom capability.  Our other cameras are not so good at getting pictures of far away things.  This has a 40x optical zoom.  Our first set of pictures was of the monster that lives out in front of the Haas house on Owens pond. (no longer a pond, just another inlet on the Chesapeake).  Can you tell what it is?

Another delay

Posted by Bryan on Monday, October 28, 2013, In : Delays
We were ready to head south today, but yesterday we ran into a little problem.  The impeller of the generator died.  This is part of the pump that pulls water into the generator for the cooling system.  The safety shutoff switch worked great, so no damage of overheating happened to the generator, but it meant more delays.  It was Sunday, so nothing was open to find spare parts.  We have since ordered two, that will arrive in Deltalville, our next stop south.  A few days without the Generator ...

Another 50 miles, some sailing

October 15th
We left Solomons island after a very peaceful night and a great sleep.  Everybody slept in.  It was so calm, there was no rocking at all.  No boat wakes, jet skies, early morning crab boats, no high winds, no waves.  It was really great.
Sahara went half way up the mast for a quick fix.  A jack line came undone and she had to go up and tie a knot to fix it.  the jack lines are the lines that make a basket for the sail, so when lowering the sail, it keeps it from going all over the...

50 miles of Sailing

Finally the rain and wind form the North Easter blew out to sea and we had great sailing weather.  We had a north to north east wind, 10-15 knots most of the day.  Seas 1-3 feet.  We motored out of the West river, about 4 miles and put up the sails.  It was a great feeling.  We put up all three sails for the first time.  Jib up front, main, and the back sail called the mizzen.   The little mizzen is the same size as the sail on our old 28 foot sailboat!  The boat was challenging to control at...

5 inches of Rain !

Posted by Bryan on Saturday, October 12, 2013, In : Meeting People
For the last three days, we have had a LOT of rain in Gailville MD.  Over 5 inches of rain.  There has been strong  15 knot wind out of the North/ North East, with gusts from 20-30.  Something land lubbers don't realize, is that the gusts of wind are never in the same direction as the wind.  Strange as it is, it becomes supper apparent when in a sailboat.  For example, when at anchor, you boat points into the wind.  You feel the boat roll 5 degrees on its side as the gust hits from off centre...

We went and anchored away from a city.  Although the city had some fun things to offer, we didn't like the jack hammers at 8:00 sharp, the police sirens at night, the helicopters over head, and the pollution.  The storm drains all run directly into the harbor.  There are designated boats going around picking up the trash all day.  And there is a nice film of oil on the water as well.  When driving up to the city you could see the haze in the air form the pollution.

Oct 2nd and 3rd.

We spend 2 days seeing Baltimore.  First day we went to the Science center that is right on the Harbor water front.

That night we went over to another boat for Burgers.  Through a mutual Canadian friend, we met the Morris family who is also traveling for the year down to the Bahamas with their children, ages 12, 13, and 18.  They are traveling on a motor trawler (but we still like them).  Sahara and Devon helped them catch some crabs in Baltimore harbor that night, came back...

We made it to the dock! (Always nervous driving this boat in close quarters and docking, still new at this)

We are at a marina within a few hundred yards of a few cool ships to see.  We took two tours today.

Going to Baltimore

We traveled up to Baltimore, well almost there.  We anchored a short distance away so we could arrive in the morning.

Somebody saw our Canadian flag and came out to meet us and Willy was a super nice guy.  Offered us a slip up in Baltimore and a ride in town, etc...

Passed under a big bridge on the way.

Most importantly, WE CAUGHT FISH!!!!!  1 blue fish and one Striped bass.  Both 12 inches long.  Threw back the striped bass.  Ate the Blue.
Forgot to take a picture of it in all the excitement...

Had some great ice cream!!!  Always a high light.

We have been sneaking up on the sailing.  So many things to do, so many new things to experiment.  Each causes a bit of stress, so we have been taking our time trying new things.  Today was the first time we put up the main and the second day with the jib.  We hit 7.1 knots with about 10 knots of wind in a broad reach.  Great feeling to be sailing along, faster than we were motoring, with only the sound of the waves on the bow.

We are now full of food, Fuel, water, and an empty holding tank (that is connected to the toilets for the non sailors).

We anchored a short distance away on a peaceful river, with no plans yet for tomorrow.  But we are ready to go anywhere.

We will probably do a little fishing and then find a nice remote spot to anchor and explore.

First Adventure

Posted by Bryan on Tuesday, September 17, 2013,

We finally cut our ties to land and sailed away.  We had a beautiful sunset our first night.  A short trip out into the river, nice, safe, protected location.  The next morning, we went to Obersons to fuel up.  90 gallons later we were off.  We learned a few things on this trip.  One, the boat can't back up in a straight line to save our lives.  I went down the wrong dock way to get to the fuel dock and had to back up.  Not a very pretty sight, but nothing was hit, and we did not go aground.
